The Great Mistake Deltans Must Avoid in Next Saturday’s Elections.

“At the end of President Buhari’s regime, every Nigerian deserves to be issued with a ‘Certificate of Survival.’”

This was a joke published by a Nigerian on one of the social media platforms, not too long ago.

According to the writer, the joke was informed by the near-hell situation that the All Progressives Congress-led government headed by President Buhari has plunged Nigerians into since May 2015.

As was expected, the joke went viral because of the large number of ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ it received.

“Why did Nigerians elect a president who they are happy and eagerly waiting to exit office in a few months’ time?” asked an American newspaper reporter.

After being told the story of how President Buhari became Nigeria’s president in 2015, the American newspaperman sighed and said: “Oh, I see, he must have been a product of mistaken identity.”

And today, millions of Nigerians are suffering from that costly error of mistaken identity of 2015.

How Deltans Can Avoid a Similar Mistake Next Saturday

On Saturday, February 25, 2023, Nigerians went to the polls to elect our next president and members of the two arms of legislative arms of our National Assembly – the Senate and the House of Representatives.

On Saturday, March 11, 2023, Nigerians, including Deltans, will be on the march again, this time, to elect new governors and members of the state houses of assembly.

In the case of Delta State, there seem to be three major contending parties, namely, the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Labour Party, LP, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

From the results of the February 25, 2023, Presidential and National Assembly elections and based on ICT Like-Minds for PDP’s immediate past article, entitled: “Sheriff vs. Omo-Agege: 5 Reasons (Why) Sheriff Is a Better Option” it is crystal clear that the election competition in Delta State is between LP and PDP.

The Great Mistake Deltans Must Avoid in Next Saturday’s Elections: Between LP and PDP

The results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections showed that the Labour Party did excellently well in almost all the states of the federation.

The single reason that is responsible for that shocking success was because of the identity, personality, and pedigree of LP’s Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

That is not to say that the presidential candidates of other political parties, including PDP, do not have such intimidating identities, personalities, and pedigrees.

Mr. Obi recorded that magnificent success mainly because of his acceptance by his supporters, especially the youths.

Most of the people who won their elections into the National Assembly on the platform of Labour Party on February 25, 223 wouldn’t have been able to achieve that feat if their elections were not held on the same day as that of the Presidential election.

Reason: Because most of them did not have what it takes to win an election, neither did they campaign to sell themselves as Mr. Obi did.

They simply won their elections out of the sentiment expressed by Mr. Obi’s supporters.

Was that sentiment not the same reason most other Nigerians and some foreign nationals criticized supporters of APC who were presumed to have voted for the APC candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom millions of other Nigerians thought shouldn’t have won the election?

The Great Mistake Deltans Must Avoid in Next Saturday’s Elections: The Way Forward

Next Saturday, March 11, 2023, is the day fixed for the elections of governors and members of the state houses of assembly.

The only way that Deltans can avoid making the costly mistake of electing the wrong candidate as their governor, on that day, as was done in 2015, is to keep sentiment out of the said elections and vote on the basis of merit.

Governing a state is not the same thing as running a personal company; it is more tasking and demanding than that.

Both Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori and Mr. Kennedy Pela are qualified to become the governor of Delta State, but on a scale of 1 to 10, the former, without doubt, have the upper hand over the latter.

Here’s why.

Both Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori and Mr. Kennedy Pela have the pre-requisite academic qualifications to become the governor of our dear state, but the former has a better public service experience, a condition that is required for the position in question, than the latter.

and His Deputy, Sir Monday John Onyeme

The ubiquitous Google will educate you more on edge over Mr. Pela.

Shouldn’t you, therefore, go for the better of the two, which is Rt. Hon. Oborevwori?

One of the major reasons supporters of Mr. Peter Obi voted for him in the last Presidential election was because he was of a new breed of politicians in Nigeria.

Rt. Hon. Oborevwori, is also one of the new breeds of politicians in Delta State, and by extension, Nigeria; not of the proverbial old school, as many of us erroneously believe.

So, let us treat him, I mean Rt. Hon. Oborevwori, as a fast-growing new breed, give him the opportunity that he needs to excel.

Both Rt. Hon. Oborevwori and Mr. Pela are of Urhobo extraction, from the Delta Central District of Delta State.

While Rt. Hon. Oborevwori is of the Sapele/Okpe/Uvwie unit, which is yet to produce neither a governor nor a deputy governor in the state, since the creation of Delta State on Tuesday, August 27, 1991, Mr. Pela is of the Ughelli/Udu unit that has produced, both a governor and a deputy governor, just as the Ethiope (East and West) unit.

Another reason the supporters of Labour Party voted massively for Mr. Obi in the last Presidential election was because of the generally perceived injustice in power rotation between the northern and southern parts of Nigeria.

If you are truly godly and sincere about injustice, and you indeed love equity and fairness, for peace to reign in Delta Central, who should you vote for?

Rt. Hon Oborevwori of the Sapele/Okpe/Uvwie unit, of course!

Throughout the ongoing campaign window for the governorship election in Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Oborevwori travelled throughout the length and breadth of the 270 wards and 25 local government areas of Delta State, selling himself and telling Deltans who he was and what he planned to do for them when elected as the governor of the state.

Unlike Rt. Hon. Oborevwori, the majority of Deltans, up till now, still do not know much about Mr. Pela, either because he does not care about telling them who he is and what he intends to do for them if voted into power, or because he erroneously believes that the credentials of his mentor, Mr. Peter Obi, could see him through.

Apart from the fact that Mr. Pela was described, by a writer, as a politician, an economist, and an entrepreneur, the information that started populating the Internet a few days and a few hours ago, nothing much is known about him.

Is voting for somebody based on another person’s credentials different from sentiment?

Of course, no!

The sentiment attitude is a negative condition that all and sundry, including Deltans, must avoid in modern politics, especially if they must prevent the making of a costly mistake that is similar to the one that brought in President Buhari in 2015?

If you remove sentiment and base your decision on merit, there is no reason you shouldn’t vote for Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori to become the next governor of Delta State.

Vote for Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori!  Vote for experience!  Vote for the one wey sabi! Vote for umbrella, PDP!

The Great Mistake Deltans Must Avoid in Next Saturday’s Elections. THE END.
